DESCRIPTION
Antique early-19th Century Georgian Solid Silver cup and cover, massive size and extremely heavy gauge (3500 grams), richly gold plated, campana-form, the lower body applied with acanthus, the neck applied with a grapevine band, the sides are applied with reeded leaf-clad handles, terminating in Bacchanalian masks, the domed cover with guilloche and beaded borders and acanthus bud finial.
The front is engraved with the original memorial inscription of Scottish horse-racing interest: "Given by The Representatives in Parliament of the Four Counties and won at Aberdeen by RODRICK The Property of The Right Honble The Earl of Kintore, Beating the Marquis of Huntly's Teddy, Mr. Maules' Bolivar and General Mackenzie's The Miller At the Aberdeen, Forfar, Kincardine & Banff Meeting, 16th September 1818".
This is an extremely large and heavy piece, exceptionally crisp, rare and magnificent, made and retailed by a great Royalty-related firm, due to the large size it can be used as a wine or champagne cooler. The trophy comes with an ebonized wooden stand. Each part is fully Hallmarked English silver (925 Standard), London, year 1818 (c), Maker's mark RG (Robert Garrard II). The base is further stamped "R. GARRARD & BROTHERS, PANTON STREET, FECERUNT". The Garrard firm is the oldest jewelelry house in the world, founded in 1735. Founder of the firm was John Wickes, in 1802 Robert Garrard (senior) took control, opening a shop in Panton Street, Haymarket, London. The son Robert Garrard Jr succeeded in 1818 (so this is one of his first pieces), together with his brothers. Garrard was crown jeweller since 1735, when his partner Wickes was appointed as goldsmith to the Prince of Wales. During the 19th Century the firm continued with a succesion of famous commissions for Royalty and in 1843 Queen Victoria bestowed the honour of Crown Jeweller on the company. A pair of gilded wine coolers by Robert Garrard II in the same style recently sold for over $68000 (please follow this link).
