DESCRIPTION

Antique 20th Century Magnificent German hand painted enamel applied on a solid silver box, beautifully painted depicting mother and her three children, the painting is clearly inspired by Johann Georg Meyer Von Bremen a famous German painter who in later carrier turned his attention to moments of everyday life especially ones of children, this subject better known as 'Muttergluck' (a mothers joy) was to become very popular in the mid to late 19th century and would inspire many other artists to create similar work. The quality of the painting on the lid of the box is perhaps the best i have ever see on enamel, the use of colour, the flawless layering of enamel, the attention to detail, gives the painting depth and life like appearance. Judging by the quality the lid it is undoubtedly painted by one of the great KPM masters known for creating similar work on porcelain plaques. The box is of unusually large size, made of very high grade silver, inside is richly gilt and the painting appears to be an original example, this would suggest it was probably a commissioned piece for a very important person. The rim of the lid is Hallmarked German silver (crown & crescent, 935 standard)
