19th Century French silver-gilt & hand-painted enamel scent bottle, of plain tapering form, the silver mount is richly gilded, body and hinged cover hand-painted depicting an exceptionally well-painted Romantic scene: a Renaissance princess is escaping a tower helped by her maid and a prince is waiting for her on a boat, the castle is surrounded by a river and a detailed landscape.

Hallmarked with a high-standard French silver mark (Boar head).

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century French solid silver-gilt & hand-painted enamel scent bottle, of plain tapering form, the silver mount is richly gilded, body and hinged cover hand-painted depicting an exceptionally well-painted Romantic scene: a Renaissance princess is escaping a tower helped by her maid and a prince is waiting for her on a boat, the castle is surrounded by a river and a detailed landscape. The hinge is tight and the top opens to reveal the original glass stopper.

Such Renaissance-inspired silver-mounted enamelled items are generally Austrian, but this particular parfume bottle - of much higher quality compared to similar pieces made in Vienna - was made in France around 1880's, all silver parts are Hallmarked with a high-standard French silver mark (Boar head).
