DESCRIPTION

Antique late-18th Century German 18k gold snuff box, of oblong form, the lid, sides, top and base applied with translucent royal blue enamel panels over a wavy engine-turned ground, elegantly painted in gold with paillon sprays of flowers within white boarders.

Hallmarked with marks identical to one in Musee Cognac-Jay (Paris), box described as Swiss or German c.1770-1780. It is number 65 in the catalogue of the collection, called "Boites en Or", by Los Llanos and Grégoire. The box numbered 66 in that collection has two of the three visible marks, and described as Swiss (Geneva) 1780-1800, but the catalogue came out before recent research, that has re-attributed much of the so- called Geneva boxes to in fact being made in Hanau, Germany. Presented in a later fitted case.
