During the reign of Louis XVI, French artisans demonstrated their unparalleled skill in crafting magnificent gold boxes, symbols of prestige and affluence often exchanged as gifts among the aristocracy. The surface is embellished with intricate engine-turned decoration in three colours of gold. Ornamental plaque applied to the lid depicts birds, flaming torch, and gardening scenes, the sides with chased pillars and laurel leaf boarders Hallmarked with French hallmarks, Paris, 1775-1785, Maker L.D.
