Antique 19th Century German large solid silver centrepiece, depicting the boat-form bowl raised on a scrolled base chased with waves, with a fully modelled figure of the god Mercury seated at the stern, the bow with the upper torso of a maiden bearing a garland of seaweed emerging from lapping waves, with removable silver-plated liner, on an oval mirror plateau with gadrooned rim. Hallmarked German silver (800+ silver standard), numbered 168387, Maker Wilkens (Wilkens & Sohne, Hemelingen).

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century German large solid silver centrepiece, depicting the boat-form bowl raised on a scrolled base chased with waves, with a fully modelled figure of the god Mercury seated at the stern, the bow with the upper torso of a maiden bearing a garland of seaweed emerging from lapping waves, with removable silver-plated liner, on an oval mirror plateau with gadrooned rim. Hallmarked German silver (800+ silver standard), numbered 168387, Maker Wilkens (Wilkens & Sohne, Hemelingen). The silver plated liner marked EINSATZ UNECHT on underside, the plateau apparently unmarked.
