DESCRIPTION

Antique late-19th Century French faux tortoiseshell & polished brass inlayed Boulle desk set, comprising a Boule letterbox, folder with blotted paper inside, letter clip and inkstand. The name 'Boulle' derives from André-Charles Boulle made famous for veneering furniture with marquetry of tortoiseshell, brass and pewter. Although he did not invent the technique, Boulle mastered the art of this complex marquetry and lent his name to its common name: boulle work.
