19th Century Chinese solid silver large decorative jewellery box, of rectangular form, decorated in repousse' high relief, on very finely tooled matted ground, depicting birds perched on blossoming cherry trees and blossoming chrysanthemums. The box is particularly large, heavy and very well crafted, by one of the most rare and outstanding silversmiths at the time, inside fitted with a contemporary velvet lined jewelery compartment.
Hallmarked with Chinese silver marks, maker's mark for Tuck Chang & Company.

Antique 19th Century rare Chinese solid silver large decorative jewellery box, of rectangular form, decorated in repousse' high relief, on very finely tooled matted ground, depicting birds perched on blossoming cherry trees and blossoming chrysanthemums. The box is particularly large, heavy and very well crafted, by one of the most rare and outstanding silversmiths at the time, inside fitted with a contemporary velvet lined jewelery compartment.
Hallmarked with Chinese silver marks (900+ standard), Tuck Chang & Company (active 1870-1920). Probably one of the best known retail silversmiths of the latter half of the 19th century in Shanghai - often referred to as being the ‘Wang Hing’ of Shanghai. Like Wang Hing of Canton and Hong Kong, Tuck Chang sold high quality jewellery, silver wares, jade and ivory. While having its own working relationships with Shanghai-based artisan silversmiths helped create a style other than that of Canton and Hong Kong. The large international resident population ensured a brisk trade in trophy silver items.
