DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century rare Chinese Solid Silver double tier box, of circular form, decorated in repousse' high relief, on very finely tooled matted ground, depicting dragons amongst clouds and beautiful floral boarders along the base and top. The box is of heavy gauge and very well crafted.

Unmarked (tested 900+ standard), this box is remarkably similar to the one by the silversmith H.T, undocumented Chinese silversmith active in Han Bac Street, Thang Long (Hanoi), Viet Nam, between 1880-1920. Hué was the Imperial capital of the Nguyẽn Dynasty, but many Chinese silversmiths and goldsmiths worked in Han Bac Street in Hanoi and specialised in filigree. It was also the bullion quarter of what is now Hanoi. For more information please see A.Von Ferscht, Chinese Export Silver 1785-1940, 4th edition 2015.
