19th Century Chinese solid silver wine ewer, impressively fine quality, baluster form, the body and base chased with chrysanthemums on matted ground, the handle naturalistically modelled imitating a branch, chased hinged cover surmounted by a similarly shaped finial.

Hallmarked, with Chinese character marks and retailers mark for Luen Wo.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century Chinese rare and exceptional solid silver wine ewer, impressive and exceptionally fine quality, baluster form, the body and base chased with chrysanthemums on matted ground, the handle naturalistically modelled imitating a branch, chased hinged cover surmounted by a similarly shaped finial.

The base hallmarked, with Chinese character marks and retailers mark for Luen Wo, this prolific retail Shanghai silversmith, worked mainly in the traditional style but is also recorded as having made Peranakan -style traditional silver items from 1880 onwards. (for more information please see A. Von Ferscht, Chinese Export Silver 1785-1940, 4th edition 2015), also bears French silver import marks.
