DESCRIPTION

Antique late-19th Century Chinese large solid silver vase, of traditional shape, embossed depicting a flying crane and an immortal carrying a basket of flowers. Cranes, or herons as they are also referred to, play an important role in Chinese mythology. In Chinese culture, the crane is venerated as the prince of all feathered creatures and thus has a legendary status. Embodying longevity and peace, it is the second most favored bird symbol after the phoenix. Throughout the imperial times, crane motifs were used on the robes of civil officials to depict their ranks. Because of its ability to fly high and over long distances, its wings were used as an amulet for protection against exhaustion.

The front of thevase with a large shield shaped cartouche, engraved with Chinese symbol and signed, flanked by a figure of a crane and a deer, the plain neck of the vase is applied with twin floral handles. The vase is of large size and features stunning workmanship. Hallmarked with Chinese marks (tested 900+ standard), Retailer TIAN BAO, Artisan HENG, operating in TIANJIN, also hallmarked with a later Soviet import mark. For more information please see A.
