DESCRIPTION

Antique late-19th Century Chinese export solid silver bowls, very large and of traditional form, hand chased with a large dragon in relief chasing the pearl of wisdom, the design is particularly well modelled and detailed, the growling face applied with flowing whiskers. The arch shaped top rim adorned with cherry blossoms, the centre of the bowl with a large vacant round cartouche and the bowl supported on a spreading plane foot.

Silver unmarked (tested 900+ silver), Maker attributed to Tuck Chang (Tuck Chang & Company, active 1870-1920). Probably one of the best known retail silversmiths of the latter half of the 19th century in Shanghai, often referred to as being the ‘Wang Hing’ of Shanghai. Like Wang Hing & Co of Canton and Hong Kong, Tuck Chang sold high quality jewellery, silver wares, jade and ivory. While having its own working relationships with Shanghai-based artisan silversmiths helped create a style other than that of Canton and Hong Kong.
