19th Century George III Silver set of three tureens and covers, comprising a soup tureen and a pair of sauce tureens en suite, magnificent size and weight, each piece of bellied circular form with shell and gadroon rims, cast feet, domed covers with rocaille decoration and embellished cast handle, each tureen complete with the original solid silver liners with curved handles. Hallmarked English Silver (925), London, year 1815 (U), Maker's mark R.G for Robert Garrard.

DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century George III Solid Silver set of three tureens and covers, comprising a soup tureen and a pair of sauce tureens en suite, magnificent size and weight, each piece of bellied circular form with shell and gadroon rims, cast feet, domed covers with rocaille decoration and embellished cast handle, each tureen complete with the original solid silver liners with curved handles.
The set is impressive and exceptional, each piece engraved to either side with coat of arms and twin crests below an earl's coronet.
The arms are probably those of Bruce quartering Brudenell and impaling Hill, for Charles Brudenell-Bruce, 2nd Earl of Ailesbury, created 1st Marquess of Ailesbury in 1821. His wife was Henrietta Maria Hill, daughter of Noel Hill, 1st Lord Berwick of Attingham. This suggests a very important provenance, as Charles Brudenell-Bruce was a great patron of arts, commissioning important monumental pieces to Paul Storr (such as the candelabrum now in the Royal Ontario Museum).
Each part is Hallmarked English Silver (925 Standard), London, year 1815 (U), Maker's mark R.G for Robert Garrard. The Garrard firm is the oldest jewellery house in the world, founded in 1735. Founder of the firm was John Wickes, in 1802 Robert Garrard (senior) took control, opening a shop in Panton Street, Haymarket, London. The son Robert Garrard Jr succeeded in 1818, together with his brothers. Garrard was crown jeweller since 1735, when his partner Wickes was appointed as goldsmith to the Prince of Wales. During the 19th Century the firm continued with a succession of famous commissions for Royalty and in 1843 Queen Victoria bestowed the honour of Crown Jeweller on the company.
