19th Century Georgian silver cup and cover, richly gilt, baluster form, the body is applied with two cast handles modelled like grape-capped acanthus branches, the neck adorned with applied grapevine bands, lobed body embossed with floral bands, the matching cover is surmounted by a large finial.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century Georgian Solid Silver cup and cover, massive size and heavy gauge (2035 grams), richly gilt, baluster form, the body is applied with two cast handles modelled like grape-capped acanthus branches, the neck adorned with applied grapevine bands, lobed body embossed with floral bands, the matching cover is surmounted by a large fiinial.

This is an impressive and magnificent piece, the original use for such large cups was mainly decorative, often given as trophies or presentation pieces, but nowadays they can be used as ice buckets or wine coolers, once removed the cover, to hold flowers at the centre of the table.

Each part is fully Hallmarked English silver (925 Standard), London, year 1826 (l), Maker's mark REEB (Rebecca Emes & Edward Barnard I).
