DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century Mongolian-style hardstone and jade-inlaid gilt metal ewer, the pear-shaped body embellished with corals, turquoises and lapislazuli, the large handle mounted with a jade "dragon" belt-hook, each side is inset with a very large ruyi-shaped jade medallion, the cover is surmounted by a jade finial, a large decorative spout issuing from the mouth of a makara.

This piece is particularly rare, made in the style of a Mongolian ewer, suggesting that the piece was probably made in Mongolia in the late 19th Century for the Chinese market, Qing dynasty. Such pieces are very rare and sought after, three almost identical ewers sold in Sotheby's for over £13,000.
