The lip of the jug is signed with the Maung Shwe Yon (and sons) deer workshop mark. Maung Shwe Yon was one of the greatest master silversmiths active in Burma during the British colonial period. MSY died in 1889 and was succeeded by his three sons Maung Shwe Bin, Maung Thu Hlaing and Maung Yin Maung who would continue the family tradition, trading as the Maung Shwe Yon Brothers. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Maung Yin Maung became the most celebrated Burmese silversmith winning the gold medal for his work in the metalwares section at the Delhi exhibition 1902-1903. This is not to cast shadow on his father who is undoubtedly responsible for setting up the most celebrated Burmese silver workshop and is also known to have participated in International exhibitions, including having displayed his silver at royal courts and now having his items displayed at the V&A museum.
