19th Century Scottish Victorian silver christening set, comprising a mug and a spoon, in the original fitted case, both pieces are richly gilt and exceptionally decorative, the mug embossed in high-relief with scrolls and fruit, one side depicting a figure riding a horse followed by a dog, the spoon is also cast depicting the same figure riding a horse followed by a dog. Hallmarked Scottish Silver (925), Glasgow, the mug year 1865 (U), the mug Maker's mark "JM&S" for J Muirhead & Sons, the spoon year 1867 (W), Maker's mark "W.C" for William Coghill.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century rare Scottish Victorian solid silver christening set, comprising a mug and a spoon, in the original fitted case, both pieces are richly gilt and exceptionally decorative, the mug embossed in high-relief with scrolls and fruit, one side depicting a figure riding a horse followed by a dog, the spoon is also cast depicting the same figure riding a horse followed by a dog.

The mug bears a memorial inscription "To Jane Adair from Aunt McNab, 5th Jan 1868", the spoon engraved with matching initials "J. A.". The set comes in its original fitted presentation retailer's box, the inside is stamped "Brook & Son, Goldsmiths to the King, 87 George Street, Edinburgh".

Both pieces are Hallmarked Scottish Silver (925 Standard), Glasgow, the mug year 1865 (U), the mug Maker's mark "JM&S" for J Muirhead & Sons, the spoon year 1867 (W), Maker's mark "W.C" for William Coghill. The set is original and comes in the original retailer's box, is not unusual for Victorian sets to be made by different silversmiths, each specializing in different objects.

In Great Condition - No damage, just general wear.
