DESCRIPTION

Antique late-18th Century Georgian solid 18k gold regimental snuff box, of rectangular plain form, the hinged cover beautifully engraved with crests on both sides and moto 'tria juncta in uno' three are united in one, the motto is commonly found on the Order of the Bath, a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. Bearing the Duke of Sutherland crest (lion rampant), Duke of Sutherland is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom which was created by William IV in 1833 for George Leveson-Gower, 2nd Marquess of Stafford. A series of marriages to heiresses by members of the Leveson-Gower family made the Dukes of Sutherland one of the richest landowning families in the United Kingdom. Hallmarked English Gold 18 (750 standard), London, year 1799 (D), Maker GC (George Cowles), engraved with the date 1839.
