DESCRIPTION

Antique 20th Century unique and exceptional Exhibition solid silver gilt cup and cover, extremely decorative in the style of the 16th Century Renaissance examples, wrythen fluted foot and matching cover, the body applied with a cast frieze depicting putti in relief, the cover surmounted by a cast figural finial modelled as a nude nymph.

The cup comes with the fitted commemorative plynth lined with rich red velvet, set with a silver gilt plaque bearing the memorial inscription: "This Silver gilt Cup and Cover was designed in 1928 by Walter P. Belk and made in Furnival Works, Sheffield. It has been exhibited at Seaford House Goldsmith's Hall London, and in Canada".

The piece is a unique hand-crafted model especially made for the famous "Queen Charlotte's Loan Exhibition of Old Silver", held at Seaford House, London, 1st May to 8th June 1929. The exhibition presented the best pieces of present-day artists, together with selected pieces of the great silversmiths of the past (please follow this link for more information and for some photos of the Exhibition). This particular cup and cover is catalogued at the number 13: "CUP AND COVER Gilt, Designers and Makers: W. P. Belk and R. G. Toms, W. P. Belk, Esq". It has been later exhibited to Canada and Goldsmiths Hall, London, 1951.

The cup and cover is Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1928 (n), Makers' marks "R&B" and ""RGT" for Walter P Belk and R G Toms. The plaque on the plynth also Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1967 (m), Maker's mark for C J Vander Ltd (very important 20th Century silversmiths).
