DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century pair of massive Persian / Parsee Solid Silver vase, impressively large and magnificent, each body of baluster form, profusely repousse' decorated with Zoroastrian religious scenes and motifs (Zoroastrianism is one of the oldest living religions in the world) on a finely tooled background, mostly representing the Zoroastrian Parsee deity Ahura Mazda, together with buildings, priests and animals, surrounded by floral and foliate panels, the neck is also chased with wise men's heads and other figures.

Although the decoration is in the Shiraz-Persian style the craftmanship appears to be extremely high compared to the usual Shiraz pieces. Similar vases have been related to workshops active in Bombay for the Parsee community living in India, but this particular pair of vases was more probably made in the city of Isfahan.

Each vase is inscribed in Farsi language, is signed (Maker unknown to me) and dated year 1257 in Farsi (according to the Persian calendar) - which means that the vases date to the year 1879.
