19th Century Extremely Rare Indian, Lucknow, silver repousse water ewer, the body is profusely and beautifully repousse' decorated with 'coriander flower pattern', engraved with scrolls and palmettes boarder, the realistically modelled handle imitating a snake slithering into the neck of the jug, the neck applied with a band of grapevines and the body with large repousse chased acanthus leaves, supported on a shaped foot.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century Extremely Rare Indian, Lucknow, solid silver repousse water ewer, the body is profusely and beautifully repousse' decorated with 'coriander flower pattern', engraved with scrolls and palmettes boarder, the realistically modelled handle imitating a snake slithering into the neck of the jug, the neck applied with a band of grapevines and the body with large repousse chased acanthus leaves, supported on a shaped foot.

As often the case for Indian silver the set is unmarked, but acid tested shows a 900+ silver standard, it dates to the 1860's. A similar example can be found on the front cover of W.Wilkinson, Indian Silver 1858-1947, page 133.
