Description

Antique 19th Century Indian Kutch (Cutch), Bhuj, Gujarat region hand crafted Solid Silver Claret Jug / Ewer, extremely heavy gauge, decorated all over with typically Cutch chasing work. Cutch silver is distinguished by its closely worked, foliate, repoussé design. The body features a tightly scrolled foliate and floral work and against a finely tooled background, vacant shield to one side. The hinged lid in the same style is applied with a cast bird, and the cast handle is in the form of a long cobra snake with twirled tail.

This is an extraordinarily made Indian Colonial piece, excellent quality of workmanship and very heavy gauge. As often the case the piece is unmarked (acid tested show a 900+ silver standard), but is clearly the product of a prominent Indian silversmith. It dates to the1880's.
