Description

Antique 19th Century Indian Kutch (Cutch), Bhuj, Gujarat region hand crafted Solid Silver Bowl, decorated all over with exceptional Cutch chasing work, pierced wavy border. Cutch silver is distinguished by its closely worked, foliate, repoussé design. The body features a tightly scrolled foliate and floral work and against a finely tooled background, with lions and tigers fighting with hunters and a figure riding an elephant fighting a tiger, vacant shield to one side.

This is an extraordinarily made Indian Colonial piece, excellent quality of workmanship, the style and quality closely remind the Oomersi Mawji pieces. As often the case the piece is unmarked (acid tested show a 900+ silver standard), but is clearly the product of a prominent Indian silversmith. It dates to the1880's.
