19th Century Indian Colonial silver salver, large size and heavy gauge, of shaped circular form with applied cast scroll and leaf boarder, the center engraved with scrolling leaves and shell design. The salver is of very heavy gauge, it takes influence from similar English pieces made in the Regency period.

Hallmarked "P&Co" for Pittar & Co, it dates to the 1830.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century exceptional Indian Colonial solid silver presentation salver, large size and heavy gauge, of shaped circular form with applied cast scroll and leaf boarder, the center engraved with scrolling leaves and shell design. The salver is of very heavy gauge, it takes influence from similar English pieces made in the Regency period.

The salver was made to be 'presented to Hugh Mc Hardy Esq, by the employees of the Gangees steam navigation company as a marks of esteem on his retirement from office as manager Calcutta 1864..'

The base bearing the Hallmark "P&Co" for Pittar & Co, one of the most important silversmiths active in Calcutta since the early 19th Century (1825-1848). This salver is particularly early, as it dates to the 1830.
