DESCRIPTION

Antique 20th Century rare and highly decorative German Solid Silver table ornament in the form of a stag, realistically modelled in the style of the Renaissance drinking vessels popular in the 16th and 17th century, resting on an oval domed base applied with lizards, frogs and tortoises, detachable head revealing the original pierced stopper.

The piece is extremely fine and is clearly inspired by the unique 17th century "Diana on a stag" automaton and drinking vessel by Joachim Friess (ca. 1620), now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (please follow this link).

The base is Hallmarked German "Sterling" 925 standard silver, pseudo-marks used in Hanau, the marks are for J. D. Schleissner & Sohne, one of the most important silver manufacturers active in Hanau in the 19th century, specializing in producing high-quality exhibition pieces in the Renaissance and Baroque style. Each part is further stamped with English silver import marks (925 standard), Chester, year 1913 (N), Importer's mark "HF".
