DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century German Solid Silver Medieval-style centerpiece, massive size, of circular form with lobed body, it rests on four large figural feet modelled like lions holding shields and surrounded by scrolling foliage, the top is surmounted by a sculpture of a pelican feeding its chicks with its own blood, in reference to the figure of Christ, a popular allegoric representation in the German culture from 12th Century until the 17th Century (please follow this link).

The piece is most probably a copy of an important Germanic Holy Roman Empire piece, such as the centrepiece in the form of a pelican, 1583 - Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (please follow this link).

The silver is Hallmarked with pseudo-marks referring to Neresheimer & Co, the preeminent silversmith and manufacturer active in Hanau during the late 19th / early 20th Century, this particular piece dates to 1890. Neresheimer specialized in Medieval and Renaissance revival pieces, and impressive replicas of museum pieces such this are rare and sought after, please follow this link to a flagon in the similar style sold for over $31000.
