DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century German solid silver pair of Wager / Marriage Cups, the cups design inspired by the early 16th century pieces, the female and male figures supporting over their head a domed smaller swiveling cup and the lower cup chased with beautiful floral patterns.

The silver wager cup was created for use in wedding banquets, where the spouse drank wine from the bigger cup and offered his bride to drink from the smaller cup, avoiding pouring out its content.

This piece is Hallmarked German Hanau silver (800+ standard), Maker's marks for B.Neresheimer & Sohne, one of the most important Hanau silversmiths. Each part is also fully Hallmarked with English import silver (925 Standard), London, year 1891 (Q), Importer's mark M.S (Martin Sugar).
