DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century German Solid Silver wall charger / sideboard dish, massive size (76 cm wide), of oval form in the style of the 16th / 17th Century silver sideboard dishes / chargers, the border embossed with scrolling foliage in the style of the early pieces with armorials on each end, the centre is finely chased with a magnificent battle scene, a knight getting arrested and a castle on fire on the background.

The scene represent a Medieval city seige, one side showing the Coat of Arms of the Count of Wurttemberg, the ruler standing on the left resembles Eberhard II called "the Jarrer" (1315-1392, Stuttgart), please compare it with the statue at the Stiftskirche, Stuttgart. For more information about the County of Wurttemberg please follow this link.

The chasing is very fine, the dish bearing pseudo-marks typical of German Hanau silver, acid tested shows a 800+ silver standard, it dates to 1880's.
