Description

Antique mid-19th Century German Solid Silver cup and cover, impressively large and heavy (1845 grams), made in the Gothic revival style, the body engraved with initials and applied with cast fruiting wines and masks protruding from a band of scrolling leaves, the conforming pedestal foot applied with dolphins, matching cover with Gothic rim. This is a particularly early and fine piece, extremely crisp and heavy, probably one of the best pieces of Hanau silver on the market. The base bears the Maker's mark "LAUFS" for Wilhelm Heinrich Hubert Laufs, one of the first Hanau silversmiths creating table silver and luxury goods in the style of the early German pieces. This particular cup and cover is probably an Exhibition piece, and is published as one of the earliest and finest examples of Hanau silver (please follow this link). The silver has been acid tested 800+ standard, and the cup dates to year 1848.
