DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century rare French solid silver presentation cup / goblet, exceptionally fine and heavy (1830 grams of high-standard "950" solid silver), it rests on a cast shaped-square base applied with finely crafted models of cherubs, each an allegory of Arts, respectively: "Poesie", "Gesang", "Composition" and "Harmonie". The tapering body is applied with a magnificent cast decoration depicting a frieze of dancing cherubs surrounded by scrolling foliage, all emerging from a tooled ground.

The cup bears a memorial inscription on each side: "Der Liederkranz Seinem Verehrten Praesidenten Adolf Roques" and "Paris den 21 Maerz 1868". The inscription probably relates to a German singing society, as the allegorical figures seem to confirm.

The cup appears to be one of the most incredible silver objects in terms of weight, quality and conditon. It is extremely crisp, detailed and decorative, and it can only be compared to some of the best exhibition pieces made in the mid/late 19th century.

Hallmarked French silver (950 Standard), Paris, year before 1868, Maker's mark very small and difficult to read, but clearly "AG", possibly Simon André Gerard.
