DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century exceptional Austrian Solid Silver mounted ewer, the enamel body imitating agate and the silver mount are profusely set with natural emeralds and pearls, applied all-over with enamelled strap-work, chased silver foot and neck, figural handle, the spout is set with a mermaid holding a floral festoon.

The ewer is made in the style of the 16th century Renaissance ewers, very fashionable during the 19th century with world exhibitions.

Such jewelled and enamelled silver objects are typical of the Austrian silversmiths, the base bears a French import mark (also used on old silver items), the handle bearing the maker's mark "LD" and another mark partially rubbed. The quality is exceptional and it could be by an important silversmith. It probably dates to 1880 or possibly earlier.

CONDITION

In Great Condition - Minor damages to the enamel and just general wear as expected.
