Hallmarked with Chinese export silver marks 90 (900+), retailers mark LH for Luen Hing.

DESCRIPTION

Antique early-20th Century rare Chinese export solid silver impressively large, detachable tea tray on a folding table, handles and corner plaques embossed with a dragon design on matted ground. Mounted on a large rosewood serving tray, of rectangular form, the surface is inlaid with silver depicting a mountainous scene, with river boats and a village.

Hallmarked with Chinese export silver marks 90 (900+ standard purity), retailers mark LH (Luen Hing), active in Shanghai 1880-1925, Luen Hing was solely a retail silversmith, operating an emporium-type establishment for luxury goods with the emphasis on silver items. It was a high quality business, pitched towards the foreign community as well as the growing affluent middle class Chinese. The following tea wares set is typical of its merchandise. As with most retail silversmiths operating in this period, they maintained their control over style and quality to a level that suited their own clientele. For more information please see A.
