DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century Mongolian-style / Chinese hardstone-inlaid solid silver ewer, the baluster body beautifully chased with scrolling foliage and flowers in relief, profusely set with corals and turquoises, the large handle elaborately modelled as a five-clawed dragon clambering up the side of the ewer, the front is set with a large carved jade medallion.

The form of the ewer closely reminds the Chinese Qing dinasty cloisonne ewers, usually brass or bronze. This piece is particularly rare as is made of solid silver (tested shows a 900+ silver standard) and is set with a large jade plaque (5.7 cm diameter) and hard-stones in the style of the Mongolian ewers, suggesting that the piece was probably made in Mongolia in the late 19th Century for the Chinese market.
