18th Century extremely rare Chinese silver-gilt filigree & gem set, pear shaped vase. The delicate filigree vase decorated throughout in a typical Chinese manor and the four sides applies with Chinese shou characters, the neck and body is set with carnelian cabochons (a stone native to Russia and India). The bouquet of flowers also set with carnelians and applied with foliage and bats.

DESCRIPTION

Antique mid-18th Century extremely rare Chinese silver-gilt filigree & gem set, pear shaped vase. The delicate filigree vase decorated throughout in a typical Chinese manor and the four sides applies with Chinese shou characters, the neck and body is set with carnelian cabochons (a stone native to Russia and India). The bouquet of flowers also set with carnelians and applied with foliage and bats.

The workmanship is of the highest quality and can only be made by 18th century master silversmiths, items of similar quality can be found in the Hermitage collection and are wonderfully illustrated in the book, 'Silver, Wonders from the east, filigree of the Tsars', elements of this vase can be seen on page 80, 'box in form of a crab' wonderful floral decoration along the edge or the Catherine the Great part gilt toilet set as illustrated on page 50.
